(1/3) Hi, I really enjoyed this hack, so I wanted to leave a review listing levels that I think could be improved. It’s very long (sorry), but I hope it is helpful. I have tried to make my explanations for my suggestions as clear as possible. I would speak Japanese, but I’m not confident enough... sorry.
~~Levels that need major changes~~ そらをかけるしょうじょ: It’s not explained how to turn around while flying. It is also not explained how to slow down while flying. Both of these are obscure tricks. That are required to complete the level. Also, the obstacle with the two up arrows is too difficult, even if you slow down. There is a much better port of “Apparitions Stalk The Night” available on SMWCentral.
きらいばし: Some platforms are bouncy, while other platforms can fall. There is no way to differentiate between these and normal platforms. Also, having to find an invisible coin block to reach the exit is unfair design. The level is too difficult to complete without looking at a map of the level.
あくうかん: Some of the layouts are impossible. This level needs a retry system. The difficulty of the layouts varies wildly. It feels like the only way to complete this level is to get lucky and hope to get the piranha layout. I will include thoughts on the layouts I played. ~Boo layout: Not fun to play, boo rings can spawn in ways that make them very difficult to avoid. Fishin’ Boo makes the second half too difficult. This layout should be removed. ~~Cave layout: This one is impossible for me, even with save states. Is it possible to beat it? Bonus room layout: I don’t understand why you included a room that always kills you. This layout should be removed. ~~~Piranha plant layout: This one would be more interesting with custom music. Also, there is a glitch where the nipper plants that move up and down can sometimes instantly kill you, even when you have a powerup. ~~~~Disappearing block layout: The ice physics should be removed, and the timing on the disappearing blocks should be more lenient. Consider adding outlines for when they are invisible. Also, add a message at the beginning saying that you need to keep your mushroom until the end of the first room. The player can get softlocked at the end if they don’t know that they need a powerup. The thwimps should be replaced with another enemy that isn’t difficult to time, because it is possible to spawn a thwimp in such a way that you cannot proceed. Also, this level should have a checkpoint at the second half. The second half is too difficult. The frame-perfect jump with the throw blocks should be removed, as well as the blind shell jumps. Even if you reach the end, going through the door sends you back to the beginning. I was unable to complete this layout. ~~~~~Factory layout: If there were more powerups, a midpoint for this level, and custom music, it would be more enjoyable.
while(1): The correct path through the maze should be indicated somewhat clearly. I was unable to beat this level properly, even with save states.
ヘルメット: If the rate of fire of the hammers was reduced, and the level had music, this would be much more enjoyable to play. The ending is also boring, and the checkpoint is too close to the end. Consider expanding on the gimmick of this level.
(2/3) ~~Good levels that need minor changes~~ そらがはいいろだから: Each of the four segments should have its own checkpoint.
とけいじかけのまてんろう: Again, each of the four segments should have its own checkpoint.
しんでんで旡んでんｗ: Add a message block to the beginning explaining how the block snake works. In addition, split the first block snake segment into two parts, with a checkpoint in the middle. Also, add a checkpoint towards the end of the level.
Masochistic Slave Temple: Entering the door at the end of each segment is too difficult. The time limits are also too strict.
まほうじんグルグル: The obstacle with three ball-and-chains on one cement block in the first room seems impossible to time correctly. Even with save states, I end up losing my powerup because of this obstacle.
かやくじゅうまんこうじょう: Needs a retry system and a checkpoint at the boss.
まどのなか: Needs a retry system. Also, some of the windows have hitboxes that don’t line up with their appearance. In addition, there should be a text box at the beginning explaining that you can hold down to drop through the bottom parts of windows.
さいきょうのふたご: The jump over the single muncher in the second segment is too difficult.
カメーン「こっちみんな」: Needs a retry system.
はくしいにんじょう: There are some parts where there are cut-off sections of the background layered in front of Mario. I’m not sure if this is intentional.
レッドキャニオン: The checkpoint is too close to the end. Also, the end of the stage looks messy because of the random stuff placed everywhere.
(3/3) ~~Levels that have a lot of issues~~ モートンのしろ(みかんせい): This level is very boring. Why would you put an incomplete level in your hack?
きかいじかけのカラクリじょう: This level is boring, repetitive, and it’s missing about two or three extra checkpoints. It’s too difficult to get to the end without dying. I will admit that the ending made me laugh, though.
バニラのとう: This level is boring, too short, and too easy. Especially at the end, where enemies and tiles are placed randomly in the air, and it’s pretty much impossible to die in the boss fight.
ねたましいほどファンタスティック: This level is boring, way too difficult, and the way to get to the exit isn’t obvious. The tiles also look very ugly and glitchy.
~~Miscellaneous Suggestions~~ -The levels that have a retry system should give you infinite retries. You shouldn’t lose a life when you die on these levels. Having to farm lives because you don’t get infinite retries for the extremely hard levels is just annoying. -Adding a feature that allows for saving manually or adding an autosave feature would also be helpful for people who aren’t using save states or are playing on real hardware. Refer to “Bring Up Save Prompt by Pressing Start” or “Autosave” on SMWCentral. -Replacing any vanilla music with custom music would be a nice change. -The dragon coins aren’t required for anything, but for people who want to collect them, not having to beat every level in one attempt would be helpful. Dragon coins should be saved individually, or when you reach a checkpoint. Refer to “Individual Dragon Coin Save” on SMWCentral. -You should be able to leave the special world without having to beat the level you were warped to. そらがはいいろだから is nearly impossible without the blue switch palace enabled, and having to reset the game just to press the switch is a bad design decision. -Sound effects are glitched in このバカガリといわないで. I would recommend fixing this. -There is no sound effect when you pause in any stage. The sound effect for unpausing works fine.
